When Bears Badger - An Algonquin Tale

Apparently, I was taken on my first canoe trip into Algonquin Park (Canoe Lake) when I was was quite young - only 18 months old. And it wouldn't be my last - although I did end up growing out of the papoose!

Throughout my youth I would spend summers with my parents - who were quite avid canoeists, as it turns out - outside in a tent. Living in Toronto, we spent quite a bit of time as a family in Algonquin, travelling routes throughout the Lake Opeongo, Canoe Lake and North Tea/Fawcett Creek areas.

Looking back now, I was very lucky to have parents who hauled me out of the city each summer to experience a more natural world. Especially seeing my friends took to referring to our part of the city as the DLS (Dirty Lakeshore).

But my father, Mike, and my mother, Mhairi (pronounced Mary - it's the Gaelic spelling), didn't want to do anything else on their vacation other then paddle. Spending time in the wilderness had a profound effect on me growing up. As a young girl, I quite literally wanted to be Pocahontas. But to me, the most memorable of my canoe trip experiences, (besides everything!) was our many encounters with the native wildlife. Those of you who have been a few steps, or paddle strokes, away from an animal in it's natural habitat, are probably best able to understand how sharing a peaceful moment with a wild creature can be a remarkably rewarding experience. Even spellbinding at times.

Our family was lucky enough to have connected with nature many times over the years. We have had the distinct pleasure (and luck) to view many a Black Bear, Moose, Deer, Fox, Rabbit, Raccoon, and many other forest creatures as well as the Loon, Wood Ducks, Turkey Vultures, Eagles, Ravens, Heron, Grouse, Mink, and more. My father, "Poppa Badger", once even saw the very elusive Wolf. Some of these creatures we happened upon unwittingly and to the surprise of all parties involved. Others we waited for hours to see, tucked away in our boats in the swamp of some back bay.

Most of these memories have blurred over the years. All but for one, that is. Perhaps I was just the right age for remembering. Or maybe it was because it was the scariest night of my life. Either way, the experience left it's mark in my memory. Whenever I go there in my mind, I am that little seven year old girl again. And the whole day and night come flooding back to me.

"There's a man in the tree!"
It was the last two days of a week long canoe trip. My mother, my father... and me. We were just coming off of the Manitou to North Tea Lake Portage in Algonquin Park. Our last night night was a scheduled stop on North Tea before carrying on, the next day, to the take out a few short portages away. Being a long weekend in the summer, campsites were scarce. My parents left me on the beach of a campsite, just around the corner from the last portage, while they paddled a short distance to see if any other sites were available closer to the next portage on our route. I was given strict instructions to stay on the beach. No swimming allowed and warned they would see me from their canoe if I misbehaved. They were going to be twenty minutes, maybe thirty - tops.

I made myself comfortable on the beach and began to sculpt the sand into some sort of Algonquin themed creation. Losing myself in play, my parents were back before I was done with my sand fun. It was still quite early in the day so my parents let me choose pancakes for lunch. Pitching the tent and other camp duties were tended to as I learned from my father that there wasn't any other available sites. I also learned that he wasn't sure if we should stay on North Tea Lake or not as there was a "bear warning" issued to all paddlers at the put in when we first arrived. But seeing as we had already started to unpack and set up camp, and nobody wanted to give up their last night in the park, the decision was already made.

Soon we were settled in by the fire pit and my mom began to mix up the pancakes. Dad lit up the old Coleman stove as we talked and prepared our meal. He was the best at making the pancakes. He would make make animal shapes and letters. Such fun to eat! It was a peaceful family moment that was suddenly interrupted by my mother's rather loud and excited exclamation "There's a man in the tree!" My father and I both glanced over in shock - as it would be the creepiest thing ever if there was some strange man staring at us, from a up a tree, in the middle of Algonquin's interior (long weekend or not)!

However, my dad - upon seeing "the man" before I was able - quickly declared "That's not a man. That's a bear!". Which was quickly followed by "Grab me those pots and pans!". The bear, having been discovered in a tree just yards away from us, took his time making his way down it's trunk with incredible ease. He was obviously in no rush. That's when things became really scary. Loud noises scare bears away. But not this one. I remember feeling the chills coming off my father as EVERY TIME he banged the pots, the bear would stop... and s-l-o-w-l-y turn around to look at us. Right in the eye. He would then give us a good stare down before turning back around and making his way to a trail, that was to lead him deep into the forest. This showdown took place multiple times. It was an encounter that didn't sit well with my father.

"We ain't seen no bears!"
There was some talk of the bear while we ate our flapjacks, which lead to a review in bear safety and a short visit by my dad to the next campsite - who was full of fisherman. This put my dad's mind at rest somewhat as the looks of their messy campsite was enough to convince him that if there was going to be any bear trouble - it would be at their camp site. But they had not seen any bears. We took that as good news.

Little more was said in front of my little ears but I remember the tension. And I also remember the night time routine being a bit different that particular evening. One of the biggest changes was the sudden appearance of a can of Naptha fuel by our tent entrance with a stick and the request for an old t-shirt from my father. He wanted to be able to have fire in a hurry and used the old t-shirt to wrap around the end of the stick to be used as a torch. I thought it was scary... but exciting. The other big change was the decision that I was to sleep BETWEEN my parents in the tent that night. And that hadn't happened since I could even remember! They also tethered me to my mother as an added precaution. To be honest, I have to admire my parents in this situation. They didn't want me to be frightened but they were honest enough with me that I was able to respect the seriousness of the situation. We had a bear in the area. And he didn't look like he was very afraid of humans.

Bears In And Out Of The Tent
Taking all the precautions we could (hanging our food, leaving a super clean camp site, no food or toiletries in the tent, Macgyver-ing a torch of sorts, etc.), we finally retired to the tent for the night. The tension was intense. My dad kept going outside to keep the Coleman lantern filled and lit. Our senses were heightened and every sound was amplified by our anticipation of a visit from the bear. It took a long while for us to all fall asleep as every few seconds an acorn dropped from it's branch and terrified the living daylights out of us. And they were dropping every where constantly! But eventually, our ears got used to the beat of the acorns and we were lulled to sleep.

My next memory is of my father's frightened voice "Mhairi! Mhairi! Give me the flashlight!" My father, unbeknownst to us, had just woke to a most terrifying experience. At that moment he could actually feel the bear's cold wet nose on his arm. It was pitch dark. He was afraid. The light beam broke the darkness of the tent while at the same time the tension broke with my father's huge sigh of relief. "It's just a tree frog!" he half laughed, half whispered. "It must have hitched a ride on me when I went outside to refill the lantern.". Some of the nervous energy was then released by our squeals of laughter. Sleep eluded us all for a bit longer, but after some time we were able to drift off again to the sound of the acorn drums.

The last time I awoke that night was like a nightmare. There were voices. My mom's side of the tent was caving in. I wasn't sleeping. No body was. It was the BEAR. And it was S-L-O-W-L-Y dragging it's body along the wall our tent. We could see the curve of it's body crushing and stretching the thin material to it's limits. It wasn't cool or exciting anymore. It was just scary. No. Scratch that. It was terrifying.

It was not an expected move by this bear. There had only been reports of the bear being sighted close to campsites. Not tents. This was extremely bold behaviour for this bear. Any bear. And it did not bode well for it's future. Or perhaps even ours! I cannot help but think today, that my parent's instincts and animal safety knowledge helped us get out of the situation without it needlessly escalating. We only had clean clothes on and/or stored in the tent (no shirts with food spills or pants that had smelly fish hands wiped on them) that night. Therefore no scents to attract or tempt an animal. Our food was hung up high and our camp and fire pit was clean. And while we usually took these precautions anyway, we did make sure to go the extra mile in our efforts in this situation due to the unusual encounter with the bear previously that day. Perhaps if we were messy campers or unknowingly had toothpaste or even a chocolate bar stashed in our tent with us, things could have ended differently. But then again, none of precautionary measures we took would have mattered if the bear had suddenly decided our family was worth the effort to eat.

Too Dark To See
As it was, the bear moved away from our tent. At which time my father had his flashlight in one hand and his hatchet in the other (with his torch ready for lighting) and was looking out the screen of our temporary, thin-walled shelter. He watched the bear, within the small beam of his flashlight, walk past our fire pit and then disappear into the blackness of the forest on the other side of our camp. With our hearts beating and our voices hushed, we all desperately hoped the bear was gone.

Not being able to get back to a restful sleep, worried that the bear was still out there (no matter what "reason" told us), we were up early and packing to go home. We all talked excitedly about our very close encounter even though each one of us was exhausted from not having slept properly. As much as I was against telling the Rangers, I could not convince my dad otherwise. I was afraid they were going to shoot the bear and my little girl mind could not bear the thought of it! I think I even cried a bit. But my dad was right. The bear's behaviour was dangerous and our experience needed to be disclosed to the Ministry. Especially as this bear was known to them. I believe they even had a nickname for the bear, although neither my father nor I can recall that name now. I never knew what happened to that bear. I'd like to think that he was trapped/relocated and the bear lived happily ever after. Yes, that's the little girl in me talking.

To this day, when I close my eyes, I can still feel the fear in that tent. Sometimes... it comes back to me when there are a few cracks too many in the dark bush around me... with me in my very thin-walled shelter. But then I always think about that "cold wet nose"... and the tree frog. And I smile and go to sleep, thankful for another day spent in a canoe and in the bush.

Not long ago we asked the question whether a Canoe was a Canoe (by any other name?), and posted about some various odd canoes and kayaks that have been designed, built and/or paddled. We soon found there are many examples of "canoes" and "kayaks" that weren't made for paddling... but are referred to as a canoe or kayak, all the same. In fact, when you come to think about it... canoes, kayaks, and canoe inspired items - can be found in many every day places.

Canoe As Art, Canoe As Life

And finally... and most popular.... is the canoe as a form of art. Now, we know our friend Mike Ormsby would argue that a canoe, especially a wooden canvas canoe, is an art form all on it's own. And normally, we would completely agree with him. But clearly, when you think about it, the canoe really has taken on a life in itself. It can be seen in our sculpture, our paintings, our every day items, and is still paddled around the world in it's various forms. It inspires us, it transforms us, it is an ancient gift, and still... it is always there with us... thru the ages. Can there really be any doubt that the canoe is a gift we celebrate?

For those who are not aware, this is the month of November (or MOvember as in MO for MOustache!) that marks the annual global awareness campaign for men's health (namely Prostate Cancer). It also helps to raise millions of dollars each year for the cause with almost 1/2 million participants who sported facial hair for the month of Movember just last year alone. That's alot of MO's!

We have always watched the month of Movember with interest. It is always fun to see how the mo's grow. But Poppa Badger has always sported a moustache and Mike usually has facial hair as well... especially as the colder months approach. But this year - after being contacted by participants Preston and Jim of Portageur.ca and H2O Paddles, respectively - Mike and Poppa Badger have decided to join in on the fun and grow a mo. But we aren't stopping there!

A Canoe is a Canoe is a Canoe

The other day, a friend made the comment to me that although there are some differences here and there in it's design, in the end, a canoe is a canoe. That got me to thinking about how different canoes and kayaks can really be - and would a canoe still be a canoe, by any other name?

We know about the traditional boat making methods and designs from history to modern times: From dugouts to birchbark to wood and canvas; from aluminum to fibreglass; then on to the various plastics and other modern materials such as Kevlar®, Carbon-Kevlar®; or even the stunning Barracuda® cloths of today. But what about making a canoe or kayak from the rind of a huge squash?!!

Take for instance the pumpkin. Not the usual material to make a boat from, right?! Well, tell that to the many who paddle giant pumpkins every year...

Or how about the coffin as a canoe? Sounds creepy, I know. But it's been done!

Apparently canoes are not always made to merely float, either. In 1947 Britain introduced the MSC, a Diving Canoe, built secretly for wartime attacks on ships in enemy harbours. Note: MSC was the acronym for Motorized Submersible Canoe.

But even when we want to see what's underneath, most of us want to stay on top of the water when we paddle. And so a perfectly transparent canoe will surely provide a much more comfortable experience then that submarine canoe, the MSC.

Then there are canoes and kayaks made from paper, cardboard, or even blue tarps, where the optimal load capacity - as well as over-all design and function - varies greatly. Probably best to stay away from the rocks in these boats!

These are all pretty weird canoes and kayaks, you will have to admit, but this one is my personal favourite.... it's an inflatable canoe... that doubles as a cloak. Yep... you read that right. It's a Cloak Boat, otherwise known as a Halkett Boat. According to Wikipedia: "Halkett's first design was a collapsible and inflatable boat made of rubber-impregnated cloth. When deflated, the hull of the boat could be worn as a cloak, the oar used as a walking stick, and the sail as an umbrella. This was followed by a two-man craft that was small enough to fit into a knapsack, and when deflated served as a waterproof blanket." For some reason, it failed to be a commercial success...

But at the end of the day, the weirdest (and probably worst) canoe there ever is to paddle... is one that is sinking! Hey! Somebody get this guy a bailer, would 'ya?!!

As I walked with the canoe planted on my shoulders towards the water, I could hear Sean's excited declaration "It's so Canadian!". Sean was about to really paddle a Canadian lake for the first time*. It would also be his first taste of Algonquin. And he was more then ready for it.

"Thinking of a brief side-trip into Canada again"
When the email came thru from author and paddler, Sean Smith (a.k.a. The Fat Paddler), that he was thinking of coming to Canada again, this time with hopes to do some paddling while experiencing a much warmer season, it was hard to contain my excitement. His last attempt to paddle in Lake Ontario was during one of the coldest of our months (January) and, although it was beyond freezing, the very tough & hefty Auzzie did live to tell the tale. But this was the end of our summer season this time, and The Fat Paddler was about to be in for a real Canadian paddling treat!

He was picked up by my mom (a.k.a. Gramma Badger) at the Husky station in Bradford (on Saturday morning) and finally arrived around noon to be whisked away in the Badger® Paddles truck for a tour that included a stop at Algonquin Outfitters in Huntsville... and the very Canadian(??) Pizza Pizza franchise for a quick lunch.

When we finally arrived at AO, Sean was delighted by the store and all it contained. Of course, he was able to sniff out the paddle section just like he can sniff out those sausages, and was soon drooling over the many paddles in the Algonquin Outfitters' racks.

With Sean about to take on the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic again this October (111 km paddle thru-out the night, people!!) he was keen on getting a bent-shaft wide bladed paddle that was made from timber. He really liked the warmth and feel of timber over some of the other materials he was using and was wishing for the perfect paddle for this monster marathon. So it wasn't long before his eyes landed on a Whiskey Jack bent shaft paddle. But not just any Whiskey Jack. This particular paddle was laminated with some pieces of uniquely burled redwood. It was absolutely stunning!

When Randy offered Sean a deal he couldn't refuse (there are so many great sales going on at AO right now you wouldn't believe it!! Seriously, you gotta check it out!) Sean had to take the paddle home with him. Even though there was a distributor for Whiskey Jack in Australia, Sean knew he wouldn't come across a special paddle, as perfect for it's Hawkesbury purpose as it was beautiful, and so this one had to be his. So you can imagine how eager he was to put it to the test as soon as possible! (Check out FatPaddler's website for pictures and more details ... I don't want to ruin it for Sean... he'll want to show you all, himself!!!)

So we threw a Badger Paddle Sock on the paddle to protect his new (and beautiful) purchase and made our way to Algonquin Park. But first we had to make a stop at Swift Canoe at Oxtongue (just outside the Park) to pick up a canoe. Sean was not only lucky enough to be experiencing clear sunny skies, but he was also fortunate enough to meet Bill Swift, the owner and founder of Swift Canoe & Kayak. Bill took some time with us and showed us some of the new Barracuda cloth samples (there was a turquoise that was to die for!) while we looked around at the canoes. Then Beth, from Algonquin Outfitters, gave Sean a tour of the facilities which included a glimpse of the tripping/guiding gear rooms.

Eventually, we picked up a Keewaydin and tied it down on the racks of the Badger® Paddles' truck. We were both hoping for a Swift Winisk but the boys were busy with lots of customers so Sean & I took what we could get and got on the road. There was a lake waiting to be explored, after all!

When we arrived at the Rock Lake put in, we were both ready for a little paddling adventure. We packed the paddles (lots of 'em!), a safety kit, some drinking water, put on our PFD's and hit the water. Between the fresh air and the sunshine, Sean soon settled in as best as he could while I prattled on in the bow. But Sean, ever the gentleman, politely matched my conversation while he tried to take in all he could of his picturesque surroundings.

As Sean tested his new Whiskey Jack paddle, he also tried out a Badger® or two as well, as we paddled along. I used my Butternut Tripper for the entire trip as I always enjoy it's weightless feel. However, I was a bit disappointed when, as we made our way across the lake, I realized that we had yet to be lucky and spot any wildlife. As we crossed the second bay we were greeted by some ducks and a couple of loons. We also spotted a small heron as well, on the river to the take out, but no beavers or moose. There was a chipmunk later in the day, but it was so small & fast that Sean could barely spot it before it scurried away. At least we didn't see any bears! (However there is a black dog at the Wolf's Den that, at a quick glance and with the right Canadian accent warning of it's approach, could easily be mistaken for a Black Bear.... right Sean?!!) *giggle*

Unfortunately I started to feel a bit queazy around this time and suggested we head back, trying to steer the canoe in the straightest and therefore quickest route possible back to the take out. I had yet to share how bad I was feeling with Sean but he had a good sense of humour about being steered from the bow and voiced no objections... but perhaps there was a bit of laughter on his part... but only once, okay... maybe twice! But that had more to do with my "oversteering" then anything else! *giggle* What can I say... I was woozy!

Once we arrived back at the truck, we were on our way to the Wolf's Den. Sean grabbed a quick nap en route, crink-ing his neck a bit in the process (poor guy!). When we arrived at the Beaver Cabin/Wolf's Den, Mike was there to meet us. His big truck was empty of the canoes and without the large trailer that he had been pulling all day (doing the canoe transfers for the big Petawawa Ironman Challenge this week), but Mike was full of excitement to see his Australian friend again.

It didn't take long for the steaks to be cooked on the BBQ and the Canada Dry Ginger Ale (special ordered by the Fat Paddler) to be mixed with a little bit of rum and a lime or two... to "keep the scurvy away".

After some great conversation, lots of laughs, and even some guitar playing by Sean (who was awesome by the way... make our ears bleed, indeed! Pish Posh!!!), we eventually retired for the evening. Sean took the bunk beds (what are the chances he chose the top bunk, anyone?!!) and Mike and I took the bedroom with the queen sized bed. We were all quick to fall asleep as Sean was completely jet-lagged, Mike was exhausted from a week of canoe transfers, and I was now under the full influence of some sort of cough or virus.

Change of *cough* Plans *cough cough*
The morning came soon enough with Mike on his way out the door before the sun was up. Sean and I slept in past nine and made haste to get our things packed and on our way before checkout time. Unfortunately, we had to change our plans for the day as I didn't have the energy to paddle to Ragged Falls as we wanted due to the way I was feeling. Instead, we headed to Buck Lake (our local lake) and Sean paddled around cottage country in Poppa Badger's kayak , while I feel asleep in the sun. But not before a quick stop at a local tourist trap for a short shopping trip... 'cause that's just tradition, right?!!

In the end, we wished Sean could have stayed longer, and in my foggy muddy mind (I was really feeling the cold/cough by this time) I know I failed in my hostess duties that day. But Sean was the perfect guest and road-trip companion. Never a complaint or frown. And before I knew it, with a quick hug and a gentlemanly kiss on my cheek, Sean was off with Gramma Badger to find his next adventure with Alan Drummond, the crew of LearnToKayakdotCA, ... and beyond.

Roll the Credits
I would like to thank Jim of H20 Paddles for dropping Sean at the Husky for pick up on Saturday as well as the staff at Algonquin Outfitters (especially Randy, Lynn, Beth and Gord) and the boys at Swift Canoe (Bill and Brian) for making Sean feel so welcome on his first ever visit to Algonquin. That goes for Ben (and the visitors) at the Wolf's Den too!

Also, a great big fat THANK YOU to my mom (a.k.a. Gramma Badger) who graciously stepped up to help out with not only watching Makobe but with watching over Sean, as well. Mike and I both also hope your remaining travels are enjoyable, fruitful, and that you arrive safely back into the arms of your family at your tour's end.

Preston was born in Hamilton, Ontario. As a young child, he would wander off into the woods looking for what was out there, and has never really grown out of that. He spends every chance he can get wandering around the Ontario wilderness. When back in the city, he spends half his time entertaining other. He started his website as an outlet to tell his tales to the right audience. He’s also particularly funny and when not portaging enjoys writing in the third person.

Nancy was born somewhere in Louisiana (probably), and after migrating north into Canada, bulked up to become the ideal portageur. Her job is threefold: reconnaissance, security and ambassadorship. She stays alert to keep her group aware of any present dangers, especially small critters that would otherwise surely steal supplies. She’s always paving the way along and around the perimeter of portages, scouting the route for any dangers and showing the group how to get past obstacles – though she often forgets the lesser skills of her comrades. Of course the greatest asset she brings is her natural ability to greet new friends along the trails and rivers. As a trade off to these skills, she rarely carries anything, and paddles even less, but all things considered, no one ever minds.

5 reasons why having your own

makes for a better paddling experience

After the movie “The Color of Money” came out, thousands of pool halls were filled with people walking in carrying a little case under their arms. They’d look down their mirrored sunglasses, pop it open and screw together their custom cue, peering around at who was watching them - no doubt, with “Werewolves of London” playing in their head. This was an annoying new trend to say the least - especially when once they started to play it became obvious that a custom cue didn’t make them any good.

Paddling is nothing like pool (for one thing, you don’t want anything to sink). Having your own paddle has nothing to do with showing off, and isn’t just a luxury for professionals. It’s more about comfort and preference - making your paddling trips as enjoyable as possible. Admittedly, like a custom cue, it will make also you feel pretty cool.

1 - Better than the rentals
Generally, when you rent a canoe it comes with paddles. So why would you want your own? Well, the paddles you get when renting a canoe are not the greatest. More often than not they’re those small bladed plastic and aluminum ones that dig little water, so they’re slow and offer little control. They’re also terribly uncomfortable, without the give of wood, or shaped to fit your hand properly. The odd time you’ll get yourself a nice wooden paddle - or one that may have been nice a few years ago. If you’re lucky it may be in a size and style that suits your needs, but usually rental paddles are pretty generic, not to mention scratched and worn from years of use.

2 - There’s a paddle for that
How do you paddle, and why? Getting yourself the right paddle for your style of paddling makes for a great experience. For example, ask yourself whether you are more of a “Destination” or “Journey” kind of person. If it’s all about just getting somewhere as quickly as possible, you may want a wider bladed paddle. On the other hand, if you plan on spending more time floating around exploring than where you’ll eventually end up, you may want a longer but thinner blade for control. Run a lot of rapids? Travel long distances? Prefer to be in the stern or the bow? There are paddle styles to suit all those needs. Talk to a good paddle maker and they’ll recommend something to suit your style.

3 - Get a grip
A truly under-rated element of the paddle is the grip. If you’re going to do a lot of paddling, a nice comfortable grip is what is going to make the experience much more pleasant. Cheap paddles and rentals will have very basic grips designed to just do the job, leaving you with sore hands and blisters. Look for a paddle with a nice contoured shape that feels good in your hands. Pick it up and take some air strokes so you can judge how good the shaft feels as well - too thin or too thick might make for hand cramps. The best part of having your own paddle is that it’ll be free of all those scratches and marks that will cut up your hands after a day’s paddle, because you’re the one taking care of it, and you can even have them fixed - cheaply for you DIY types.

4 - Size matters
Often you may not be able to choose the size of your rented paddle, but even when you have a choice you might find yourself with a bad fit. A poorly fitted paddle can make you bend at the torso during your stroke, making you shift your weight unnecessarily for an unstable and uncomfortable ride. One measuring technique is to check the paddle’s height up to your chin. Unfortunately, this only works for one type (size) of blade. It’s the paddle’s shaft that’s important. The other more common method is to hold the paddle over your head, checking for your arms resting at right angles. This might be a better way to measure, but you still might not be happy with the size of your paddle. The best size will be the one that meets your paddling style. Some like to reach out further, some sit lower or tilted in the canoe. Try out some different sizes and see what makes you more comfortable and stable.

5 - As special and unique as you are
Recently, when my friends and I were choosing new paddle styles, I took it rather seriously. I spent hours deciding on what size and style I needed. After I finally decided, I asked what made one friend choose his. Turns out, choosing between two similar types, he simply chose the cooler looking one - a completely valid deciding factor. Paddles have all kinds of looks with all kinds of options. You can get paddles in all kinds of colours and stains, in unique woods, with special logos, imprints and even custom paint jobs.

Bonus - The Connection
There are some that can look at their paddle, show you each and every scratch and tell you a great story about where it happened and why. The first paddle I owned came from a friend who took great care with his, and insisted I take it, with all the stories attached to it. I was lucky to find it was exactly the right size. Sure, it had been worn in for me, but I soon knew every nook and cranny. It felt perfect in my hand, and it moved the water just right. It was like that old t-shirt you love because it fits you just right. This paddle had been many places, and maybe I was imagining it all, but after all its travels it felt like the paddle was guiding me.

And that, is why you want your own paddle.

According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, the word is broken down like so:

badger |ˈbajər|
noun1 a heavily built omnivorous nocturnal mammal of the weasel family, typically having a gray and blackcoat. • Several genera and species in the family Mustelidae, in particular the Eurasian Meles meles, which has a white head with two black stripes, and the North American Taxidea taxus, with a white stripe on the head.
2 ( Badger) informal a native of Wisconsin.verb [ trans. ]ask (someone) repeatedly and annoyingly for something; pester : journalists badgered him about the deals |Tom had finally badgered her into going | [ trans. ] his daughter was always badgering him to let her join.ORIGIN early 16th cent.: perhaps from badge , with reference to its distinctive head markings. The verb sense (late 18th cent.) originates from the formerly popular sport of badger baiting.

Thus the term "badgering"is known as pestering and bothering. But - these traits are not from the animal itself, but rather from the early sport of Badger Baiting whereas hunters would send dogs to harass badgers for entertainment and for blood sport. Similar to dog fighting, badger baiting was forced combat between the badger and a succession of hounds. Badger baiting, now thankfully illegal, would typically end with the death of the badger and most likely major injury to the dogs.

So it seems the origin of the verb sense of the word "badger", descending from the formerly popular sport of badger baiting (late 18th century*), and "badgering" actually describes human behaviour towards the badger and not the actual animal's behaviour towards us humans. Interestingly the term "badgering", thru this retired sport, became a popular term still used widely today - and it's meaning isn't very positive!

Badger® Rustic & Natural Edge Creations

One thing we like to do around here at Badger® is to keep it natural. Always looking for ways to be respectful of our resources and planet, we also like to find a purpose for everything (with the goal to have the least amount of scrap and waste possible). So while we do appreciate and offer modern smooth edged wood canoe paddle racks and such, we also take great pleasure in expressing our craft in a rustic and more charming style as well.

When making paddles there are a lot of cut-offs and discarded wood, pieces with really pretty knots, and we felt that "scrap" could be put to better use then just used for burning in the wood stove during the winter for warmth. Many of these end pieces and even sometimes whole entire boards cannot be used for our paddle production, yet are distinctively beautiful and workable just the same. And this by-product of paddle production shouldn't be wasted or discarded by any means, so we usually turn our cast offs from the possibility of becoming firewood into one-of-a-kind treasures.

Having made some natural edge cutting boards and other charming items for friends and family over the years, we have just now decided (due to the urging of others who had received these rustic pieces as gifts) to make these works available to all. Every Man Has A Story....

I remember watching an episode of the now defunct Oprah Winfrey Show where the premise of the installment was that everybody has a story to tell. Some more exciting then others, but interesting none-the-less. Oprah had an illustration board of her audience member's seating chart on display, and she threw a dart at it randomly choosing the person who's "seat" she hit on the board to tell their life story. By chance she struck upon a man who had narrowly escaped a war torn country as a child and later immigrated to the U.S.A. when he was a young man and continued his education, on his own, to become a Doctor. It was an unusual story, one that received many oooo's and aaaahhh's from the audience. Reading the newly released book, The Fat Paddler, reminded me of the hypothesis I witnessed on Oprah's show that day. But this time, Fate threw a dart and the incredible bullseye story is, indeed, Sean Smith's.

I have never met Sean in person but have been following his escapades, on his ever popular blog The Fat Paddler, for sometime now - with one of my favourite adventures consisting of a hefty secret agent man being chased down by an irate security guy for getting too close to the Plastiki during a "Stealth Paddle". So in his own way, Sean, had already been receiving a fair share of oooo's and aaahhh's from his own audience thru his online journal (FatPaddler.com) detailing his life's expedition as a big but encouraging man with a number of paddles and boats at his disposal.

A larger then life tale of recovery and inspiration!

So when the Fat Paddler (Sean Smith) announced that a book was coming out, I was keen to get my paws on one as soon as I was able. When it finally happened this past week, I excitedly cracked open my copy to find an unexpected and deeply moving tale that was full of honesty, humour and other significant messages. And while I was used to finding myself laughing out loud at Sean's words, I was surprised to find my eyes welling up with tears - on more then one occasion - entranced by his poetical ways, impacted by his ability to evoke such an emotional response from the reader. To be honest, I had a hard time putting the book down once I had it started. By the end of it, I had a new profound respect for Sean and his beautiful wife, Rebecca - and I wanted to read it again.

Having come awfully close to death on more then one occasion in his life, and living thru it to once again become strong in spirit and fat with personal growth, is a huge testament to Sean's spirit and appetite for life. His expressive descriptions of his true to life global experiences put you right inside of Sean's head, and the way he tells it will have you focused on every word. From two brutal vehicle accidents, to the tragic Bali Bombings of 2002, all the way thru to an Alaskan trip of a lifetime - including a wife and two gorgeous daughters that helped inspire him to become the man he is today - his story is uniquely and excitingly courageous and yet modest at the same time.

All in all, Sean's journey to becoming the Fat Paddler, thru much physical and mental adversity, is a story that is sure to inspire the majority of people - not just people who paddle. And while it is definitely laugh out loud funny, with many smiles thru-out, you will most likely come away with your own thoughts stirred and many deeper emotions having been evoked. With Sean's true respect for Love, Family, Nature, Charity, Humour (can't forget Rugby either!), Self Reflection and Life, his tale will be sure to resonate with the masses as, in a number of ways, many of his struggles are our own. Thus, if Oprah was correct and it is indeed true that every person has a story to tell, then Sean's tale is surely of epic proportions... And I'm not just talking about how much he eats or the awesome Fat Paddler's Favourite Recipes section in the back, either!! Tee Hee Hee

Not wanting the book to end, I've already started reading it again.....

Early In The Morning...

There’s always somebody who has to be steering the ship, and in some cases, the canoe.

I’m not much of a paddler, but I do enjoy getting out on a lake or river in a canoe, particularly in the early morning or late evening.

Last year I had the opportunity to enjoy an early morning sunrise on the Petawawa River, where my boyfriend’s family has a cottage. We rose early thinking that we would perhaps go for a walk, with my camera in hand. Instead we were politely but firmly told by Frank’s cousin-in-law that the best sights were seen from the river itself.

The sun was just rising, and there was a slight mist coming off the river. The air was almost still, giving the water just a small ripple. With my camera slung over my neck, and paddle in hand, my boyfriend Frank and I started out, exploring the river.

After a little while, I eager to take photos and had to stop paddling. Frank took over, keeping us moving along the length of the river. The one thing I quickly learned is that it’s not easy to take photos while a canoe is in motion. Even a slight bob in the water can affect the steadiness of your hand when trying to snap a photo in low light.

SOLO TRIPPING MEETS SOCIAL NETWORKING (AN OXYMORON?)

Ahhhhh....Solo Tripping, a chance to get away from it all, the traffic, the work, the house, the chores, the people, the telephone. Wait a minute, back up, the telephone?

Like the popularity of the calculator when it replaced the slide ruler and or abacus, the smartphone is taking the world by storm. While having a mobile device is not necessary to live, living can be made easier by having one.

Never will I advocate that having access to the internet in your pocket is better than preparedness. Mobile technology comes with plenty of limitations. Battery life, reception, weather conditions, or the ability to simply use the device… just to name a few.

Having a mobile internet device (like an iPad) can be
comforting when going solo into the wilderness.

Having a cell phone or mobile internet device can be very comforting when going solo into the wilderness, so can having a good sense of direction, maps and a compass or GPS. I had my smartphone with me on my last solo trip and it alerted me that it was too hot to use and had to be cooled down before it would work (much like myself at that time).

Recently in my neck of the woods, the cellular network was expanded so that no matter where I ended up, I had excellent service. I have the ability to play movies or music right from the net. I can play games, download new apps and keep in constant communication with whoever I need to. Which brings us to social networking websites. Some people are for them and some people are dead against them. I will sum up my thoughts about that very quickly. Social networking allows me to organize ( and waste ) my free time. If I want company on a paddle, all I have to do is post where and when and people will show up. The key word is sharing. I love to share all the fun that I am having with as many people as I can.

I belong to a couple of paddling communities here in Thunder Bay, Ontario. For each, there is a "group" on Facebook. New paddlers are joining the groups daily and looking for fellow paddlers to paddle with, do some tripping and/or learn new skills. There is a very strong sense of camaraderie amongst the paddlers both new and old. Pictures and videos are posted from most events so that everyone can re-live their adventures. This is what seems to "drive the machine" for a lot of paddlers I know. It inspires them as they realize "Hey, I could do that!"

On the flip side, a lot of people are addicted to social networks, spending hours updating their status, posting photos and videos, sharing links and playing games. As a social media commando, one often feels it is very important to be the fastest, sharpest or wittiest commenter out there in cyberspace. If you find yourself relating to this, you are missing out on the beauty that you came out to enjoy in the first place.

I use social networking sites for practical purposes as well as entertainment.

For example; THE TICK

Up until a few weeks ago, I'd never seen a tick. All of a sudden, I had to remove seven of the little nasties off me. I was a little nervous (ok a lot nervous) about the whole thing, having heard the most horrible terrifying stories about the deadly diseases they carry, so I posted my plight on Facebook. Within minutes, I found out the type of tick, and the many various ways of removing them along with a few jokes at my expense. Even though I was in the middle of nowhere and a half day paddle back to my car, I knew I was going to be just fine.

so he was able to relax and enjoy his trip after removing
7 "nasties" (a.k.a. ticks) from his own skin while out solo.

So, assuming that you have the time, space and battery power to bring your social network with you..... I say "Why NOT"?

Badger's Tip of the Week to go Monthly

Actually, this week's "tip" is, in truth, a bit more of a Badger update then a tip. Unfortunately, our Badger Paddles' Tip of the Week will be going on hiatus for the rest of July (as we will be spending more time outside and on the water and less time in front of our computer screens) and when we do come back online, there will be a few changes for this blog. So, while we love bringing you tips every week, we are going to scale back on the amount of suggested tips we bring you so we can make room for some other Badger features.

Not wanting to bombard your Facebook or Twitter feed with too much Badger (even though you do dig us!), we've decided we will be doing tips on a more monthly basis. That's right! We really don't want to badger you too much. But when we get back, we still plan to bring you lots of great content including a Badger's Tip of the Month, a few guest bloggers , and our newly planned Badger's Featured Paddler series as well as our not-so-regular items. So be sure to stay tuned in the future. Badger Paddles' Tip of the Week - Think Of Your PFD Like A Bra

Badger Paddles' Tip of the Week includes information on paddling, camping, portaging, boat transport, and maintenance tips, as well as any other information that we may find to be useful around our sett.
This week's tip is pretty obvious. And it's really more of a reminder then a tip, but here is is: WEAR YOUR PFD***! Hey, we told you it was obvious! But with so many people drowning in canoe, kayak and other boating accidents every year, it is also obvious that not enough of us are getting the message.

When out on the water, too many unpredictable circumstances can develop (such as getting cramps or not being able to swim because of very cold water, or even a serious head injury) so it is really important to remember: DON'T JUST BRING IT - PUT IT ON!

Look... whenever you go out in your canoe or kayak*, you really should wear your lifejacket. We know, we know.... not all of you want to... neither do we at times. But, really, it's not so bad! In fact, wearing a lifejacket or Personal Floatation Device (PFD) is a lot like wearing a bra!

So How is a PFD Like a Bra**?
•First off, just like a brassiere, a PFD or lifejacket must be fitted properly to do it's job right. And it really doesn't work if you don't do it up and wear it correctly!

•At one time in history, bras were limited in colour choices (boring beige or white) as were lifejackets (bright orange, anyone?). But both today's bra styles and PFD choices are limitless in the number of colour choices and designs available for numerous types of activities.

•Back in the day, bras, corsets (and yep! Lifejackets too!) were big, ugly, and pretty uncomfortable. However, with modern technological advances, both the bra and the life jacket have come a long way. Brassieres and PFD's are cut and styled for more comfort now, are more lightweight and technically advanced.

•Just like life jackets, there are rules and different bra styles for various occasions. Buying a PFD for whitewater kayaking is different then shopping for a life vest for a fisherman/woman - just as you wouldn't buy a jogging bra to wear with a strapless dress!

many added safety features and specifications

•As with a bra, when it comes to PFD's, it seems most men don't like wearing one! (In Canada, 90% of boaters succumbing to drowning were male and 78% of those who drowned in boating incidents were not wearing a lifejacket or PFD at the time of the incident). But we know that there are men who wear them.... and yes, that goes for both bras and PFD's!!!

•Just like a good brassiere, a good life jacket must be washed with care, usually by hand.

•Interestingly enough, and for the Clifford C. Clavin in all of us, Playtex and PFD's are more originally alike then one would think. The inventor of spandex and owner of Playtex supplied materials for the war effort in World War Ⅱ. When the war ended, apparently the company used the materials developed for life jackets (yep! lifejackets!) for other purposes, particularly for intimate apparel and other garments such as girdles and bras (yep! bras!). •A bra and/or lifejacket is a personal fit. If you gain or lose the right (or wrong!) amount of weight, this could render your bra or PFD as unsuitable. Make sure your life jacket (and brassiere, if applicable!) is sized properly and is appropriate for the chosen activity.

•Let's face it, as most ladies would know, when you first put on your brassiere - or lifejacket - you become very aware of it. But once you get used to it, you don't even think about it anymore. And once it becomes your routine, you may even feel a bit weird WITHOUT it!

•"And, just like a bra, wearing one should be voluntary, not mandatory." From Daniel Pike, a paddling dad from Ontario. Good one, Daniel! Very funny!!!

•For some women, they must wear a bra for support and to help prevent back pain. For EVERYONE, wearing a lifejacket could help prevent death.

Hey - don't think we are too weird for coming up with this correlation as we are obviously not the first to put the idea of brassieres and life vests together. The "Bay Watch" bikini life jacket concept by Bernstrand & Co. certainly takes the idea of bras & PFDs as far as it could ever go! (Source: http://gizmodo.com/) However, something about it's design makes us think it probably isn't Canadian Coast Guard Approved!!!

Now for the REALLY serious stuff:
According to www.redcross.ca, over one half of all recreational boating drownings, in Canada, occurred in lakes. About 39% of drowning victims were fishing from a boat or canoe and another 9% were canoeing. And another Canadian Red Cross study covering 15 years of boating deaths in Canada (1991 to 2006), stated it was found that of 2,232 people who drowned or died of hypothermia, only 12% were wearing a life jacket properly. And out of the 94% of Canadians who drowned, 90% of these boaters were found NOT wearing a lifejacket. Those are some scary statistics!

Too many of us think that we can find our lifejacket in an emergency and put it on if we fall into the water. But we aren't being realistic. With pre-existing health problems like low blood pressure or a sudden heart attack, an unexpected head injury, or even just the shock of cold water, could make it extremely difficult for anyone to follow thru with this plan. Already having your lifejacket on BEFORE you end up in the water will definitely make it easier for you to rescue yourself or, at least, be more able to remain floating until someone else can find and help rescue you if needed.

REMEMBER: DON'T JUST BRING IT - PUT IT ON! IT'S NOT ANY WORSE THEN HAVING TO WEAR A BRA, AFTER ALL! And remember fellas, if us girls can do it... then you can too!!!

*There are circumstances where wearing a PDF is not considered mandatory (i.e. racing)

**Because not all who paddle have worn a brassiere in their lifetime (although let's face it - there are a lot more men who have had on a bra for a lark then who would be willing to admit!), we felt we should explain ourselves more....

Gun Socks ≠ Paddle Socks

Paddle Bag or Paddle Sock?
There are many paddle bags on the market that are referred to as "paddle socks" but most are made of fleece, canvas, etc. and are really more bag then sock. They aren't technically a sock (in the knitted traditional sense of the word), and usually are paddle specific. Paddle bags are also pretty expensive starting at any where from $30 for most and even over $100 for some. They can be really heavy and bulky too.

When we first started looking for a way to transport our paddles we needed a bag that could be used time and time again for paddles of different lengths and varying blade shapes that was quick and easy to put on and take off. We started making our own from recycled hockey socks. We would actually take two (or three - depending on the length needed) old hockey socks and hand-sew them together to make one long sock - with one end sewn closed and the other left open like a sleeve.

This worked temporarily but they were much, much, too loose (forever falling down) and we really wanted something we could easily cinch closed and that looked a bit more aesthetic then Poppa Badger's retired (mix-matched) hockey socks. So we went on the look-out for a knitter/manufacturer to give us the same style stretch as the hockey sock provided (quickly slipping on and off the paddle with little to no "grand production") but a closer knit that we could make Badger Paddle Socks from.

works and feels much like a real sock does.

We found a some-what local fella who made and distributed central vacuum hose covers. Always open to other applications for his product (including Baseball Bat Covers, Golf Ball & Club bags, Gun Socs [gun sock], and more), he agreed to sell us what we needed. Thus, the Badger Paddle Sock was born. The first of it's kind, the Badger Paddle Sock will fit almost any canoe paddle up to 65" long!

But please, for the health of your wooden paddle, DO NOT substitute a "Gun Sock" for a "Paddle Sock", whether it be a "Badger Paddle Sock" or not! Gun Socks are not only too short for most traditional canoe paddles, but - more importantly - most Guns Socks are actually impregnated with silicone which will not only help hold moisture in the sock - but anywhere the silicone touches bare wood or an area that the finish has worn thin, there could be a real problem when you go to maintain it. The silicone will make it difficult for your oil or varnish to adhere properly to the wood.

According to the Sporting Clays ~ The Wingshooters Magazine forum, gun owners have even been warning others about the effects of a silicone impregnated gun sock on wood:

"Be aware that if you have any scratches exposing bare wood or worn areas on the gun, that the finish is worn off. This silicone will get into the pores of the wood and if and when you would ever get the gun refinished, the finish will not stick to these areas. I had just thought you could sand it out but according to this gun refinisher, it is very hard to get any finish to stick to these affected areas. So silicone on metal only keep it off of the wood."

So while Badger Paddle Socks are made in a similar way to many gun socks (and maybe check your hose cover for your central-vac - it be could material made from the same guy who made your paddle sock too!) obviously our socks are meant for paddles and DO NOT have any silicone or rust-prohibiting chemicals impregnated into the material. Increasing Your Chances Of Viewing Wildlife In Their Natural Habitat:
Growing up spending summer holidays interior camping in Algonquin Park with my parents, I (Fiona) had the opportunity to view lots of fauna in their natural habitat. Over the years we have had the pleasure (and luck) to view many a Black Bear, Moose, Deer, Fox, Rabbit, Raccoon, and many other forest creatures as well as the Loon, Wood Ducks, Turkey Vultures, Eagles, Ravens, Heron, Grouse, Mink, and more. Some of these creatures we happened upon unwittingly and to the surprise of all parties involved. Others we waited for hours to see, tucked away in our boats in the swamp of some back bay. If you are wanting to see wildlife on your trip into any wilderness region, the following tips will definitely help to increase your chance of success... so get your camera ready!

Time of Day:
Although it is possible to spot an animal at 2 in the afternoon, it is much more likely have success if you watch for wildlife at dawn and at dusk. I cannot remember all the countless evenings, and the very early hours after dawn, when we sat in a swamp, not uttering a word (sometimes giggling either from the boredom of the silent wait - or my Grandfather's soft snoring - which really annoyed my Grandmother). And so we waited... and waited... and waited for some creature... any creature... to come to to water's edge from the dark and silent forest. Thankfully, we were rewarded many times for our efforts. And in my impressionable youth, I was altered by each and every experience in some small way. A love for the wilderness was really getting deep into my blood.

Be Quiet, Be Still, Be Patient:
At a place like Algonquin Park, if you sit quietly in a small bay (or even at your campsite) for 15 to 20 minutes, you will have a much better chance of spotting a wild bird or mammal. You will also realize just how loud and hungry those mosquitoes can sound! But remember: no sudden movements. Even to lift your arm to scratch your nose can make noise that an animal can hear (clothing brushing against itself). Try to keep all movement and sound to a minimum and speak in whispers if possible. If the animal doesn't notice you at first, enjoy the moment. Because as soon as you click that camera or cause any motion or other disturbance, they will be aware of your presence - and therefore change their behaviour (or most likely move away from the area and you).

Location, Location, Location:
In Algonquin, it is not unheard of seeing a moose or bear* walk right thru your camp site. But you will probably increase your chances by finding a bog, field or shoreline to follow. Animals go were people go. Explore beyond your campsite, walk a trail, portage, or old logging road and you will see lots of signs of animals because animals use the same trails as we do. If you see an animal while you are driving, remember to stop and pullover off the road (there is no need to block traffic or create a dangerous situation for other drivers). As for more natural environments, meadows or flat low lying wet areas like swamps or muskegs, are great places to watch for wildlife. When you paddle, staying close to shorelines is also a great tip or choose to do a river. In larger Ontario parks, don't be surprised if you spot a beaver, martin or even a little mink along the shore. We have!

Bionic Eyes:
This tip is to remind you to bring binoculars. You will be thankful to get an extra close up view of the wildlife without invading their space - they will linger longer if you respect them from a distance. Note: it is possible that a camera's zoom feature will also let you see more detail.

Converse with a Local Outfitter or Old Boy:
Talking with a popular and knowledgable Outfitter, like Algonquin Outfitters, or an Old Boy**, can give you a great window into the best places to view the regional wildlife. For example, they can tell you things like how: "Fill In Name Here" Trail has lots of deer at a particular time of the year; or "Fill In Name Here" Lake has plenty of moose in the back east bay after the first inlet; or even that Highway gets lots of moose along the road side in the Spring licking the salt from the winter roads, etc., etc.

The Bigger, The Better:
When there is a larger habitat left intact, there is a much better chance of spotting a wildlife. Larger parks or conservations areas are better then smaller ones. And usually, the deeper the route takes you into the interior of a large park, the less people and the more wildlife you will encounter. In the years that we have been wilderness camping, we have countless memories of many a bear, sometimes even with cubs, and deer with their young too. We have seen a loon fight an innocent but confused wayward moose to drive it away from it's nest. We have witnessed deer drink by the shore's edge and disappear the moment they noticed we were there. We have watched moose dive for it's food at the bottom of a lake. We've seen families of ducks, loons and even some mice. We have watched a bear swim from one island to the next in search of food. We have been surrounded by a swarm of Tiger Swallow Tail butterflies and watched a fox romp playfully thru a field. We have accidentally startled sleeping bears at Captain Dennison's old farm on Opeongo (Algonquin) and have been shocked into fright by countless partridge on numerous portages. We have heard a jackrabbit scream and the cries of a wolf pack. We have seen snakes, frogs, crayfish and some crazy big leaches. We've had a bear drag it's body down the length of the tent we were sleeping in on Tea Lake (Algonquin) and have even experienced that moose that walks thru campsites. We've watched beaver work and otters play. My father (a.k.a. Poppa Badger) has even been lucky enough to actually see the elusive wolf. Most, if not all of these events, took place in large parks and conservation areas like Algonquin, Temagami, and Quetico.

Luck Be A Lady:

In the end, you will also need a little bit of luck. You won't always be successful. More often then not, you will come away without a close-up wildlife experience even if you do everything right. But don't give up. In my personal opinion, one of the most pleasurable experiences about canoeing and camping - in most parts of Canada - is being able to view and co-exist with the local wildlife. Seeing a moose, unaware, tromp down to the shore edge of a bog, and make his way into the water walking thru the deep mud without a struggle, is a surprisingly exhilarating experience. One you will never forget. And if you follow these tips, you too, may be lucky (like we have been) and will experience many chances to see wildlife in their natural habitat, enjoying their existence as the free creatures they were born to be.

*It is also not unheard of to have a bear visit your camp in the middle of the night to pilfer your edibles if he/she can. Never try to attract animals with food. And don't try to domesticate any critters by teaching them to feed from your hand. Keep your supplies in a smell proof container and make your site as bear/critter proof as is possible.

** An "Old Boy", as Mike refers to them, is a euphemism for an older gentleman who is known to be a long time resident and who has years (and years) of local knowledge and interesting (and not so interesting) facts about the area. Old Boys can often be lured into a conversation with the offer of a cold beer.

Badger Paddles' Tip of the Week - Making a Fire with Newspaper

One of the traditions that I remember from my childhood trips to Algonquin's interior was my father bringing that day's newspaper as reading material for his first couple of days in the bush. Of course, it's secondary purpose was to help light the fire at our campsite as well, but only after the paper had been given a good read over by my dad.

I also remember that one of the first skills my father taught me around camp was how to light a fire. And don't kid yourself... it is a skill. It can take a while to figure out the principles of fire-making, but with a few pages of old newspaper and this week's tip, you will be known as THE campfire-starter in no time!

Some people just scrunch up the newspaper into a ball. And that works... some of the time. But more often then not (especially at a windy or damp camp site) your fire needs a bit more sustained heat to get it going and those scrunched up newspaper balls burn really fast and the loose burnt up paper ashes don't hold much warmth (and can even fly away when you blow on them!). Plus it uses a lot of paper.

That is where this week's tip comes in. Instead of scrunching or crumpling the news paper into a ball, rip a few pages of newspaper into 2-3 inch strips and roll each individual strip into loose mini paper logs (See photos below). Tuck the loose end of the rolled paper into centre of the tube to help hold it's structure. Note, you can also use string to tie the roll in place but using extra materials is not really necessary as tucking the end into the roll loosely seems to do the trick just as well.

When finished, these rolled bits of paper will give you a flame AND a coal base to work with for your fire. They burn much slower then a crumpled page of paper. You can even blow on them to increase your flame and air-flow without the same worry that you will blow all the burning paper away. But be careful not to roll these little fire-starter tubes too tight or they will not burn well. Loose is better, for more air flow.

Here is an example (see images below) of a fire lit with ONLY 2 pages of newspaper, ripped into strips and rolled into the fire starter tubes/logs. These 2 pages of newspaper produced 6 or 7 little rolled fire-starters - just enough to get a good fire going, but you can always add more depending on need. Notice how long the coal base of these little paper log fire-starters last and how hot they keep the fire base until the wood catches.

These lil' fire-starters really hold the heat!

Of course, you can't beat good ol'birchbark. It works dry or wet and burns hot hot HOT! But this handy natural fire-starter isn't always readily found and should only be harvested from the ground - NEVER take birch bark from a live tree - ALWAYS wait until it falls to the ground (naturally) for collection - or you could cause the tree to die prematurely due to an insect infestation or other disease. And while newspaper doesn't really compare to a birchbark lit fire, at least when you burn your newspaper at camp, you don't have to pack it out.

Well, we hope you enjoy your camp fire... but only after you enjoy reading your newspaper, that is!!!

Freestyle Canoeing Hits the Mainstream Media

It is always funny to hear a first-time viewer of Freestyle Canoeing voice their concern that the paddler is going to fall out of the boat. You may have even heard this reaction before if you have ever leaned your canoe over on it's hull to solo paddle. It's technical term is Freestyle Canoeing derived from it's more basic sister, Canadian Style, but with a bit more flourish and a competitive aspect thrown in as well. And if it's the first time you have ever witnessed this style of paddling, then you probably think the paddler is going to tip over and go for a swim at any moment. But after a few minutes, you relax because you realize that the person is doing it, not only on purpose, but with such grace that you start to see the beauty in it.

According to FreeStyleCanoeing.Com:

"FreeStyle Canoeing is the "art and science" of quietwater paddling.

FreeStyle Canoeing emphasizes smooth, efficient flatwater paddling and precision boat control. FreeStyle can be applied to all canoeing situations.

Many FreeStylers paddle to music making an expressible, interpretive art form. FreeStyle paddling requires no special equipment other than a boat, a paddle, a life jacket, and in most cases a kneeling pad."

But for those not familiar with this style of paddling, it can look a bit odd. Especially when some soft paddling music is thrown in with a matching themed costume!

"The concept of freestyle canoe has never entered my sphere of influence, and I’m still not sure I believe it even after watching these videos. It’s like a cross between canoeing, synchronized swimming, and Halloween, with the spirit of LARPing thrown in for good measure."

That is how sports fan and writer , Jerod (of midwestsportsfans.com) describes Freestyle Canoeing after watching a few Youtube videos featuring some costumed paddlers. We don't know about you, but no one in the Badger clan has ever paddled in costume before. Nor have we ever paddled anything but Canadian Style, ourselves. But it seems that these videos of outfitted paddlers are making their way into the mainstream media. And, because of the added costume element, some of them are pretty funny to a novel viewer... or, as Jerod the sports writer has put it, perhaps even: bizarre.

Yes, there are some hardcore canoe dance videos making their way into minds of the masses. Just yesterday, David Johnston of PaddlingInstructor.Com posted the news that Freestyle Canoeing was mentioned in a hilarious segment by Steven Colbert of the popular television show The Colbert Report. Mentioned... and giggled at. Because it seems that, while the art of Freestyle looks interesting enough, the act of paddling to music AND wearing a costume has brought it to the attention of many... and they think that it's pretty funny. Especially the NFL sports fans who are looking for other forms of sports entertainment due to the current situation plaguing the NFL.

"Freestyle canoe? It made no sense, unless maybe as a description for a time when Li’l Wayne, Snoop Dogg, and Eminem were at a lake party and decided to take a canoe out for a while and do some rapping."

While "Jerod", the author of the quotes above and below, and others are no doubt amused by the costumes and music choices (a couple of the examples he uses is of the paddler dressed as a Pirate "dancing" to the theme song from the Pirates of the Caribbean and another is of a gentleman paddling to the tune of Chris DeBurgh's "Lady in Red" in a green canoe), there is an obvious respect for the skills needed to lean a canoe and make it dance on the water.... As he goes on to qualify his words:

"With all that said, whether it’s bizarre to me or not, clearly these folks get a giant kick of it, so I say good for them. Just because some jackwagon blogger doesn’t understand anything about the sport and decides to be snarky about it doesn’t lessen its excitement or sheer awesomeness for the people who participate in it.

In fact, the more I write about this, the more I am finding my mind focus less on mocking the shocking images I just watched and more on trying to decide what song and costume I would choose for my freestyle canoe routine. First instinct: Can’t Help Falling In Love by UB40. It’s got “freestyle canoe” written all over it."

Badger Paddles' Tip of the Week - Making the Most out of a Wilderness Canoe Trip

Besides not having a plug for your curling iron, there are lots of other modern day conveniences missing from life in the bush. While many enjoy escaping from the whirlwind of their contemporary lifestyles, for some first time campers, the culture shock of interior or wilderness camping can be a bit too much... or too little - as the usual complaint amongst newbie campers (especially the young ones) is that they are bored.

To make the most out of your wilderness canoe trip and to help make the experience more enjoyable, there are a number of things you can do.

Start by researching area maps and check to see what books and other literature is available about the area. Don't be afraid to talk to the locals, either, as you are able. If you learn to identify the regional flora and fauna and other local natural features for your trip, it will only help to make your trip more pleasurable. Especially for the kids.

Plan for rainy days by bringing a deck of cards, or a novel to read, to help pass the time. For kids, a home-made "Fidget Kit"* is always a good tool to have around for rainy weather and/or long days spent in the canoe.

Another great tip is to plan your canoe trip with a preferred activity in mind; whether it is to fish, sketch/paint, explore, to take photographs, or to write. Keep a trip journal on hand to record your experiences and points of interest. And, to make the tripping experience that much more enjoyable for the next camper, always leave every campsite cleaner then you found it.

Badger Wood Oil - Why Hemp?

It's no secret that the finishing industry is changing. Environmental concerns about the chemicals and toxins being used in finishing products are a real concern. VOC*** count and content is a real issue. Processes are evolving and new materials are being sought. Pretty soon, you may even be hard pressed to find varnish on store shelves that is NOT water-based.

As Badger is always concerned with the environmental and social impact that we have on the planet, last year we decided to get serious about our research and look for the most environmentally friendly and socially responsible oil finish that we could find in today's modern world. We really wanted to give our fellow paddlers a quality finishing product that was easy to use, non-toxic, environmentally safe (minimal effect on our rivers, lakes and oceans as well as safe for children), worldwide sustainability, and yet affordable too. We asked around to find out about a few new products and were excited to try the recommended and novel (for us) oils like Orange and Hemp. But after researching and using various products and oils from Danish Oil, to Tung, to Teak, to Hemp to Orange Oil to Linseed; the decision was easy. Hemp Seed Oil was the clear winner, for a number of reasons. All of them good.

Environmentally speaking, when we looked at the available natural oils, we were blown away by the qualities of Hemp Seed Oil. Hemp Seed Oil is completely non-toxic, can be grown in almost any part of the world (without the need for large amounts of pesticides or any herbicides), is one of the fastest growing plants known to man, is food-safe, cleans up with soap and water, provides a smooth hard finish, no harsh fumes, darkens the wood while enhancing the grain patterns nicely, and there is no issue with getting it on your hands or skin, nor are there any respiratory effects associated with this product. Hemp can be grown for food, clothing or for oil, including fuel. It's antimicrobial and anti fungal properties even help to prevent mold.

Tung and Teak oils are wonderful too, but we don't grow Tung Trees (to harvest the nut for processing the oil) here in Canada, nor do we grow the hardwood known as Teak, therefore these oils (while excellent products) must be imported (from Asia/China) which greatly impacts the carbon footprint of these oils. We needed something closer to home. Also, these oils, when all natural, are considered non-toxic but you have to check your product packaging wisely as solvents and other chemicals are usually mixed with the Tung or Teak Oils to help then cure and dry faster. But this is usually referred to a "Tung Oil Finish" or "Teak Oil Finish" on the label. As a side note, some people also prefer a Tung Oil finish over Linseed Oil, as Linseed is known to darken the wood considerably. Also, another interesting fact about Tung Oil is that some people, who suffer from nut allergies, can have an allergic reaction to Tung Oil as the oil originates from an actual nut.

Raw Linseed Oil (from Flax), left as just natural, has the same qualities that raw Hemp Seed Oil has: it takes forever to dry properly. But unlike Boiled Linseed Oil - which is not really just boiled but has added toxic chemical solvents to help the oil dry and cure properly when applied to wood - Hemp Seed Oil only has to be put through an oxidization process to be able to harden when cured. Again, Hemp was the winner where the environment is concerned.

We also looked at the "environmentally friendly" Orange Oil, too, but eventually passed it over for the following reasons:

Orange oil, a natural oil and byproduct of orange juice production, proves that "natural" doesn't always mean safe. Orange Oil is considered a very effective and potent pesticide for bugs but it doesn't only kill them - it also melts the exoskeletons of insects! It is also considered to be an effective antiseptic and very aromatic and powerful solvent. And although thought to be relatively safe for contact with humans and pets (it's biodegradable and has fairly low toxicity), you must be careful when using Orange Oil as it is a mild skin irritant (as it dissolves protective skin oils on humans too).

Orange Oil is known to also irritate the respiratory tract. You should always wear gloves and insure there is adequate ventilation when using Orange Oil, just like Boiled Linseed Oil or any other oil mixed with solvents. Orange Oil is also very flammable (much more so then Hemp Oil). There is even some evidence of carcinogenicity. One warning stipulated "Although Orange Oil is safer than nearly all other caustic, synthetic and toxic chemicals such as ammonia and bleach (chlorine) Orange Oil is not non-toxic, and should never be [sic] left where children may come into contact."**

But we still wanted to test Orange Oil as a wood maintenance finish, regardless of Poppa Badger's insistence that it was to be used only as a solvent, and even though the above qualities were a bit concerning (especially the fact that Orange Oil is highly acidic and can be a skin irritant). Also, besides the possible respiratory effects, another concern for us was it's strong "smell" or "scent" as an attractant for animals. For paddlers who like to spend time in a wilderness situation, the last thing any of us need is an odour that will attract rodents, pests and other larger animals to our campsite.

Wanting to test the safety of bringing an mostly orange-oiled paddle into the bush, we set out a number of freshly oiled paddles last fall (overnight) in a wilderness area close to home. Every paddle finished in each oil, namely: Boiled Linseed, Tung, Teak, Hemp and Orange (specifically one was oiled with our Hemp Oil mixed with citrus solvents and one paddle was oiled with Hemp mixed with Japan Driers. Another two had the same mixtures of solvents to oil but instead of Hemp Seed Oil we used Tung. And then the same ratio repeated again, but with Orange Oil. The rest were oiled with the old standbys of Boiled Linseed, Tung Oil Finish and Teak).

Just as we had suspected, the orange-oiled paddles were the only paddles, to not only get knocked over by creatures in the night, but to also sustain some scratches (one paddle even sported a few teeth marks!). While there was lots of mouse signs left behind (meaning mouse scat) with the Orange-oiled paddles, we were also convinced a racoon had joined in the smelly goodness of orange fun. For this reason and the many reasons above, we decided that the Orange Oil was not the best maintenance oil for our paddles. However, when used as a solvent only, the Orange Oil did help a bit with the drying process and we were happy to find that it was a nice (less toxic then the usual solvents used) addition when used as a solvent only.

Interestingly, the rest of the paddles, including the paddles with the Hemp Oil were left untouched as well as the paddles with the mix of Hemp Seed Oil and Citrus* Solvents/Japan Driers. But the greatest thing about our research is that we were introduced to some really great products and methods of using them. We love the way all of the oils felt on the paddles, each bringing it's own depth to the wood, but it was clear that many factors were not being met as we dictated in the beginning of our research. Orange oil was not safe enough as a maintenance oil, for our purposes, but was a clear winner as an added solvent for the purpose of drying the Hemp Oil a bit faster. We still use citrus solvents in our production at times, along with other Japan Driers and, as you are probably aware by now, we totally fell in love with the Hemp Seed Oil. It gave a great finish without any health or environmental concerns (unless orange oil is added as a solvent/drier - then extra precautions are needed).

Wanting to share this ecologically responsible and very environmentally friendly and safe maintenance oil with other paddlers, we made this 100% all Natural Hemp Seed Oil available to the general public. And because it is not considered a dangerous good - our Badger Wood Oil can be shipped anywhere in the world without special packaging or specific arrangements. You can also mix Hemp Seed Oil with a bit of Orange Oil/Citrus Solvents for a less harmful concoction then using chemical solvents usually found in oil finishes today). We are proud to stand behind our product - however, just remember - it's not a fresh & flavourful hemp seed oil like that meant for cooking or salad dressings - but it is food safe. And if you happen to have some residual oil left over on your hands or paddle, this oil won't melt the exoskeletons off of any creatures in or out of the water. In fact, it may even help attract a fish your way, so make sure you keep a rod in the water while you paddle... who knows, it may help you catch the big one!

Plus don't forget, we still offer a standard finish too with a traditional mix of oil, various solvents and even some varnish properties (not unlike Danish Oil). So no matter your preference, whether a traditional oiled finish or an all natural oil, you know that Badger has your paddles covered, paws down!

Badger's Tip of the Week - Impromptu Kayak/Canoe Repairs

While we hope you don't ever find yourself having to use these specific tips, we do believe the following information for emergency boat repairs is extremely useful to know.... because, well... you just never know!

Minor impromptu fibreglass/kevlar canoe or kayak repairs can be done while on a trip, even if you didn't bring a proper repair kit with you. For a minor crack or leak, repair the area by carefully burning/melting some polypropylene rope and then dripping the liquid into the crack. Let cool.

Polypropylene can fix a small leak when
brought to it's melting point.

For a larger hole or damaged area, seek out and respectfully harvest some Birch bark and Balsam sap from the surrounding forest. Use a thin piece of Birch bark as a temporary emergency patch held in place with some gum from a Balsam tree. (If you do not have these specific species available to you, research your local flora and fauna to become familiar with substitute materials for those specified in this week's tip.)

Use the "gum" from a Balsam tree as a sticky adhesive.

Use the bark from a Birch tree as a temporary patch.

These are all meant as temporary repairs, of course. We would always recommend repairing your canoe properly as soon as your trip has ended, but in an emergency, these quick fix tips could possibly get you back to civilization with much less worry. And, if you end up getting all that sticky sap on your hands, just grab some rubbing alcohol or on-the-go hand sanitizer from your first aid kit, apply to the sticky area and rub vigorously. The alcohol should dissolve the resin.

This past Sunday (June 5th, 2011), thousands of paddlers in over 50 countries around the world participated in a global environmental awareness campaign for our oceans and waterways. Originating in Dubai, the idea was to bring paddlers together in a relay style world wide paddle - all over the planet - called "Paddle For The Planet".

When Dez, from Blast Paddlers, brought this great cause to our attention on Facebook (just days before it was all scheduled to take place), and asked us to host an event for Paddle For The Planet, we were very keen to participate. After all, one of the main reasons we offer a Badger Paddle Sock with every paddle* is to omit the use of plastic in our shipping process by replacing plastic bags with our re-usable fabric socks. So, with just days left before the big day arrived, we invited anyone who wished to join us at Buck Lake Beach to help raise awareness for the plight of our oceans and to Paddle For The Planet.

camera, we were all on our way!

The day turned out to be beautiful in Muskoka. We (Mike, Fiona and Makobe) arrived at the beach early so pimped up our canoe with our Paddle For The Planet signs and put on our Team Fat Paddler T-shirts while we waited. As it turns out, not too many people were able to attend as they had already made other plans but all were interested in the idea when we spoke to them, some neighbours stopping in on their way to what ever business they had in town and beyond. Not to paddle, but to to show their support. However there were a few more paddlers on the beach bringing an array of watercraft. By the time the excitement had died down, (unfortunately I had forgotten to get the camera out), Mike and Makobe were ready to get out on the water and do some paddling

We paddled around the lake until stopping at an island for Makobe to swim (or do the "dog paddle" for the planet). While Makobe was busy enjoying the cool waters of Buck Lake, Mike and I took some time to enjoy the beauty of it all. The strong breeze kept the bugs at bay and the sun, while strong, gave us a good amount of relief by hiding behind the clouds just before it became unbearable.

A few hours later we were back home, but not before we raised awareness with a few fisherman and some lucky paddlers and supporters got to take home some free Badger SWAG and coupon books from Algonquin Outfitters (with over $900 in savings!). All in all, considering it was very last minute, Paddle For The Planet was a success in our little part of the world! Next year will be even better, though!!!

Badger's Tip of the Week - Paddle For The Planet

This week's tip is about getting involved!

According to the Blast Paddler's website:

Each year, three times as much rubbish is dumped into the world’s oceans as the weight of fish caught. (www.marinebio.org)
32% of the world’s fisheries are overexploited, depleted or recovering, which threatens the health, economy, and livelihoods of communities all over the world.
The global fishing fleet is estimated to be 250% larger than needed to catch what the ocean can sustainably produce. (www.marinebio.org)
Every year tens of millions of sharks die a slow death because of finning. Finning is the inhumane practice of hacking off the shark’s fins and throwing its still living body back into the sea. The sharks either starve to death, are eaten alive by other fish, or drown (if they are not in constant movement their gills cannot extract oxygen from the water). Shark fins are being “harvested” in ever greater numbers to feed the growing demand for shark fin soup, an Asian “delicacy”. (www.stopsharkfinning.net)

So... what can we do about it?!!

Well... we can PADDLE FOR THE PLANET!!!

Again, according to the Blast Paddler's website:

"Paddle For The Planet 2011 ( PFTP ) is a global effort to to raise awareness about the terrible things that are happening in the Ocean we use daily.

Our common goal is to hold a world wide seires of “relay” style paddle events through whicl all paddlers participate in and become part of a global effort increase awareness of what’s going on in our oceans and want to create an opportunity to make a difference. We want to allow all paddlers the opportunity to help, and by doing so, help bring about change, by merely doing what we love to do – paddle. Paddle for the Planet’s aim is to support Marine conservation, and as the campaign grows over the ensuing years, we endeavor to support all kinds of Marine Conservation.

For the first couple of years we are going focus our efforts on an initial campaign to raise funds for a marine reserve in Raja Ampat, Indonesia and keep it protected. Each year we want to grow this idea and see the project branch out further and further, as more paddlers get involved keeping more and more waters protected. You can help make a difference.

How does it all work, and why is it on the 5th of June:

June 5th is World Environment Day, so there there is no more fitting date for us to hold Paddle For The Planet.

We want paddlers paddling for the planet in Every Time Zone on that day! Ideally they will paddle between 5km to 10km ( so they are on the water for around an hour ).

Even just one or two people paddling together in the same area as a group is sufficient!

We really need your help to make this a success, and to get this WORLD WIDE paddle happening."

Badger's Tip of the Week - Tarpaulin: Don't Get Caught Up The Creek Without One

There is a list of essential gear that many paddlers abide by. And, although that list may differ a bit according to individual need, if you don't already have a tarp as part of that mandatory gear list, then this week's tip just may change that. A tarp (and some rope) is a great emergency tool and can also greatly improve quality of life around a camp site. Once you realize the number of ways in which a tarp (stuffed anywhere into a boat or pack) can be utilized in any number of situations, then you probably won't want to get caught up the creek, river or lake, without one either.

Some Things You Can Do With A Tarp

Use it as a ground sheet. (either under your tent to protect the floor or as a "picnic blanket" while you eat).

Can be used as a substitute tent fly (who hasn't gone on a camping trip where someone forgot their fly?).

Use it alone as a shelter for sleeping (string some rope between two trees and use rocks and/or logs to keep the sides down)(find 4 trees to substitute as poles and tie the tarp between them, low to the ground and sloping down on one side - to divert water away from you incase it rains).

Use it as a wind break - create a wall by stringing the tarp between two trees.

Use it as a rain shelter - create a roof by stretching the tarp between trees - slope the tarp (or find a tall tree-wood pole) so as to not collect rain water and weigh it down in the middle.

Use it as a sun shelter - tie the tarp off between trees, etc. at an angle away from the sun.

Make a canoe sail with it (using long tree wood poles usually found on location rigged to your satisfaction) See above photo.

Use it as a make-shift stretcher to carry a sick/injured person over short distances/portages.

Use it to collect or catch water for drinking and/or washing.

Use it in an emergency to help a person retain much needed warmth (by wrapping them in a tarp after putting them in their sleeping bag).

Can be cut strategically and used as an emergency stand-in rain poncho

Can be used to make a Bear Burrito* (when hanging your food is not possible).

Can be used to collect and transport larger amounts of small bits of firewood or to keep firewood dry during a down pour.

Use it to make an outside area private for the purpose of changing or latrine use (wrap tarp around one or two trees to create a corner stall and secure to other trees on each side).

Can be used to fashion a quick backpack (put your stuff in the middle of the tarp and wrap it up in a tight roll, add some rope and your imagination and you have yourself a make-shift pack).

If the tarp is a strong colour visually, it could be used as a way to signal if you become lost or stranded. Find an open area or clearing and spread the tarp out flat on the ground (holding it down with rocks at the corners) so your location can be seen from the air.

Add some duct tape or tarp clips to your rope bag and who knows where your tarp could take you! See: BLUE TARP KAYAK

So as you can see, whether you are planning a day paddle or an extended period away in the bush, a tarpaulin can make a huge difference in your trip - especially when it really matters most. We always bring a tarp with us on our paddling adventures and have had to dig it out more then once and were always glad we had it. In fact, having a tarp on hand could possibly help to save our lives one day. And yours too.

*A Bear Burrito is when you take all of the food packs and gear that you would normally hang in a tree (as a precaution against bears) and wrap/roll/fold them into a neat (some what smell-tight) tarp package a few hundred metres away from your camp site.

Badger's Tip of the Week - Sticking Ferrules

A Quick and Natural Remedy

for 2 pc Fishing Rod Ferrules that Stick

After storing and/or carrying around a 2 piece fishing rod in inclement weather, sometimes (when we go to join the two rod halves), the ferrules can prove to be resistant or even get stuck. If you are finding it a bit difficult joining your rod together, next time try rubbing a little bit of "grease" from the side of your nose (using your finger) onto the male ferrule of your rod, to help glide it into place more easily.

Rub some of the oil from your skin (side of the nose) onto
the male ferrule portion of your two piece fishing rod
before joining the two halves for easy assembly.

The natural oils in your skin around your nose (usually considered one of the most oily parts of the face) help to lubricate the metal pieces when joining the rod together. And this "grease" does not cause any sort of suction effect like oil based lubricants can. A useful tip for someone who wants to get their "fish on" in a hurry without the hassle of digging thru their condensed fishing kit for another solution.

Apparently, this is also a good tip for KAYAKERS as well. According to Gord Baker of Algonquin Outfitters, "The nose grease trick works on well on kayak paddle ferrules as well.". That's good to know, thanks Gord!!
